7.1 Earthquake - Update

bridge over the largest river in HondurasAt 2:24am Thursday morning a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Honduras.  It was centered 75 miles north of our little town of La Ceiba.

The 30-second earthquake destroyed over 80 homes and damaged hundreds of others. So far six are reported dead and 40 injured.  More then 20 aftershocks have been measured with some as large as 4.8.

leveled buildingHonduras is the only country in the region with no building codes.  Because of this the substantial number of poor people build flimsy homes out of scrap metal, discarded wood or unfilled cinder blocks.

Before the earthquake 28% of Honduras was unemployed and the average person made only $3,000 per year.  These poor people are exactly the ones that cannot afford to repair or rebuild a quake damaged home.  They remain scared of further aftershocks and wonder how they are going to fix damaged homes.

It appears that some of our future time and efforts will be diverted towards the repairing of broken hearts and damaged homes.  Please pray for the poor of Honduras.

Our family is fine.  We were a bit scared.  Fortunately our only casualty was a couple of broken glasses.
