An Interesting Couple Of Days In Honduras
Manuel Zelaya, the ex-President of Honduras, remains hold up in the Brazilian embassy in the capital city of Honduras, where he has been since Monday with his family and 40 or so supporters. Government officials wait outside the compound to arrest him the moment he steps out of the embassy.
The United Nations has condemned the government’s “acts of harassment” of those inside the Brazilian embassy. The U.N. references the elimination of electricity, phones and water. The U.N. did not address the conflict as a whole, only the embassy standoff.
Mr. Zelaya was quoted in the Miami Herald as saying, "Israeli mercenaries are torturing him with high-frequency radiation." Unfortunately, it is this quote that has brought more media attention then anything in the past few days.
Both the current President (Micheletti) and the ex-President (Zalaya) state they are interested in negotiations. Both sides, however, have refused to meet because of the others insistence on conditions they view as unacceptable.
Saturday marks the 90th day since the Honduran President was ousted. He has asked supporters to mark the anniversary with mass protests. In the past few days both sides have participated in large, mostly non-violent, protests.
The 24 hour a day mandatory curfew has been lifted and the government has returned to nightly curfews. Long lines have plagued stores, banks and gas stations as citizens fear more lengthy curfews.
We continue to remain uninvolved and out of harms way. We continue to move forward with previously scheduled ministry events. On Sunday we plan on celebrating Honduras’ “Day of the Bible” by distributing free Bibles in our two areas of ministry focus; Armenia Bonito and El Sauce.
Please continue to pray for us and the people of Honduras.
