Attending Church In Armenia Bonito
Usually we attend Sunday worship at a large church close to downtown La Ceiba. But, we are in the middle of visiting the churches in Armenia Bonito, the neighborhood where we work. There are three small Evangelical churches in this community.
Last weak we visited the largest of the three churches. It is located in the center of the community. The Pastor has been serving there for four years. He cannot live off of the salary he receives from the church so he also has a job as a street sweeper in La Ceiba. At this worship service there were 35 people, of which only 5 were men. They have a tin roof and sit on rickety wooden benches.
Yesterday we attended the “blue church” as everyone calls it. The Pastor and his wife live on the property of the church. He recently suffered a stroke and his wife is temporarily taking over preaching duties. This church is much smaller. They have musical instruments and sit on plastic patio chairs. At this service there were only 15 people and only one of them was male.
In each church they sing and pray and worship very differently then we are used to. It is not bad, just different. We have yet to recognize any of the songs, but we clap in time. The preaching is very basic, but biblical. The congregants are very energetic and welcoming to us. We know some of the members from our activates in the community, but most are new to us.
Each weak we have been invited to the front where we introduced ourselves and talked about our work. We also provided a brief Bible lesson. All of the Pastors are eager to have Mike preach.
Next Sunday we will attend the third church in Armenia Bonito.
