Back Up The Mountain

The Pettengill family at the first of three crosses - San Jose behind usToday we hiked to the top of the 6500 ft. Cerro San Miguel (St. Michael hill). Our apartment sits at 3500 ft. So, this was a 3000 foot ascent for us. At the top of the hill is the Cruz de Alajuelita, and an incredible view of all of San Jose. This 27 meter (88 feet) tall cross was constructed over 70 years ago and can be seen throughout the entire San Jose Valley. It is the third of three crosses you pass on your way to the top.

At the base of the 88 foot, third cross on top of the mountainThis is the second time we hiked this mountain. We first did it back in back in January. This time we ascended with a group of 21 (5 Central Americans and 16 North Americans). We took two buses to the trailhead and started up the mountain just after 9am.

It is a difficult hike, but, we knew what we were getting into this time and really enjoyed ourselves. At the top we all had a great lunch with an amazing view and wonderful company. We look forward to hiking up at least one more time before we leave Costa Rica.
