Bags Of Water For Holy Week

Last week was Holy Week. Businesses, schools and government all shut down in Honduras.  La Ceiba, which is a beach town, gets flooded with vacationers, drinkers and partiers.  Hundreds of thousands of people doing everything except remembering the bodily resurrection of Christ.

bag of waterOur team purchased 2,000 bags of water at a nickel per bag.  We affixed a label with this verse (in Spanish) on each bag, “I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleanness, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. - Ezekiel 36:25”.  We then drove around town and handed out the water to the revelers from the back of our truck.

the team in the truckDuring the hot and humid week everyone appreciated the free and refreshing treat.  In some areas people clamoring for the water mobbed our team.  Many people expressed confusion as to why we were handing out free water.  But, hundreds expressed appreciation and gratitude.

handing out the bagsAdmittedly this is not an incredibly effective form of evangelism.  However, our goals were accomplished.  For a mere $100 we were able to demonstrate the free love and mercy of Christ to thousands of people by quenching their thirst on a hot day.  In addition, at a time when few people were thinking about the resurrection of Christ, we were able to place a Bible verse in their hands and, at least for a moment, turn them toward the cross.
