Book Review: The Supremacy of God in Preaching
John Piper is a Baptist Pastor, author, and theologian, serving at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Piper directed this book at the Preacher. However, it easily applies to anyone who shares the word with another – and that should be every Christian.
Preaching is one of the most important facets of our worship in the church. However, quality, Christ-centered preaching is becoming less prevalent. More and more preachers and study leaders are settling on preaching that is centered around what man wants to hear and less about God’s glory.
God’s glory, the gift of the cross and the power of the Holy Spirit should be the focus of all preaching. When your job is to save sinners, revive the church and preserve the saints, you must approach your task with intense gravity and great earnestness. Those sharing the word are always to strive to cultivate God’s glory in their preaching.
The second half of the book uses the life of Jonathan Edwards to exemplify a preacher who understands the importance of his work. The life, theology and preaching of Edwards is revealed to allow us to see his perseverance and diligence towards others. Edwards took such care in preaching because of the God he understood.
