Book Review: Truth Unchanged, Unchanging
Martyn Lloyd-Jones, minister of Westminster Chapel in London for 33 years, was one of the most God honoring preachers of his day. First published in 1951, this book explores the basic concept that there is something fundamentally wrong with man.The good doctor tells us that in reality we don’t have a fundamental understanding of what man is. Man, even with all of his technological advances and years of learning, is still the exact same creature he was in the beginning.
Man’s primary problem is that he is a sinful being. He has never changed that and is not improving it. Despite all of our advances in medicine, mechanics, technology and science we still commit the same atrocities that our forefathers did thousands of years ago. Despite all of our knowledge, we haven’t learned a thing about sin, and how not to do it. We still harm ourselves, hurt others and disappoint God the exact same ways Adam and Eve did. We’ve just become more efficient at it.
Lloyd-Jones calls us back to the timeless truths found in scripture. No matter how hard man has searched he has not found lasting truth in any source other then God’s word. The fourth chapter in this book, The Simple Gospel, is one of the best teachings I have come across in apologetics.
