Child Sexual Abuse In Honduras
On Wednesday and Thursday our team received training on the awareness of child sexual abuse. Steve Collins from MTW flew down for a few days to educate and certify the adults of our team through the Darkness to Light program. All nine members of our team are now certified to teach this valuable tool to other groups or individuals.
Child sexual abuse is at epidemic proportions in Honduras. Just under 10% of all women in Honduras report being sexually abused between 15-24. The majority of sexual abuse cases in Honduras occur before the age of 11. Sexual abuse statistics in Honduras are among the highest in the world. A recent survey reported that 10,000 children are currently victims of commercial sexual abuse.
Our team does not know exactly how we are going to use this skill set in the future. However, simply having the knowledge and awareness of this ugly topic is a major benefit to our ministry. We interact with kids every day and God has placed us in a situation where we can potentially impact many lives.
