Costa Rican Independence Day

Madison celebrating Costa Rican independenceSeptember 15th is Costa Rican Independence Day. On that day in 1821 they received their independence from Spain. While few Costa Ricans actually sought independence from Spain 186 years ago it is widely celebrated now. Today, Independence Day is celebrated with big patriotic parades, period appropriate dress and fiestas.

While this Saturday is the big day, our school, and many others celebrate it on Friday. At school today all the adults and all the kids wore Costa Rican colors (red, white and blue) and some wore traditional apparel. We marched in a parade around campus carrying paper lanterns on sticks. The parade stopped at the flag pole for the raising of the Costa Rican flag and singing of the national anthem.
