Day Of The Bible

200 Bibles in boxes in the back of our truckIn Honduras, each year, the last Sunday of September is “Day of the Bible”.  Today, September 28th, is Day of the Bible.  To celebrate Day of the Bible we purchased 200 Spanish language Bibles and took them into the poor community of Armenia Bonito.

Before we started we thought that we would have no problem distributing our 200 Bibles in this 2500 person community.  We showed up at 10:30am.  Our thought process was that if we showed up during church hours we would be giving Bibles to people who were not attending a church – the people who needed them most.  With all this, we figured it would take a couple of hours to pass the Bibles out door to door.  Boy were we ever wrong.

Maddy handing out free Bibles in Armenia BonitoWe parked in the center of the community.  Word quickly got out in the neighborhood.  We never even moved from that original spot.  Hundreds of people ran up to our truck and we handed all 200 Bibles out in 10 minutes.  Unfortunately, after our Bibles were gone, we turned away dozens of people who wanted a copy of God’s Word.

The throng of people seeking free BiblesWe never figured that the response would be so great.  As usual we underestimated how God would work in the hearts of these people.  This community is incredibly poor and their ability to purchase even the smallest items is limited.  But, clearly their desire to read about the saving grace of Christ is not diminished by their poverty.  With each Bible we handed out an evangelism tract in Spanish.

This evening 200 homes have a Bible that previously had none.  This evening hundreds of ears may hear God’s word in their own language.
