Drought In Honduras
This week the government of Honduras declared a state of emergency due to of a severe water shortage. There is a harsh drought currently impacting all of Honduras. The annual rainy season is coming to an end with a fraction of the usual rain. Most of Honduras’ biggest exports are agricultural based.
There are approximately 500,000 families in desperate need of food and water. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is predicting that if the drought continues more than 100,000 Hondurans will be at risk for famine. The shortage of food and water has been exacerbated by the reduction in financial aide from other countries, due to the five month-long political crises. In addition it was recently reported that the unemployment rate recently rose above 50%.
Past droughts have left tens of thousands of Hondurans scavenging for bananas and mangoes or eating leaves from trees, further worsening the already serious problems of malnutrition and chronic illness in the country.
Please pray for the people of Honduras.
