English Tuesdays
When we first entered the community of Armenia Bonito, a year ago, we surveyed the neighborhood and asked the citizens what they needed most to improve their lives. To our surprise an overwhelming majority said they needed English. Only one in 1000 Hondurans speak English. Many Hondurans view English as a path to a good job and a better life.
Each Tuesday afternoon this summer we are teaching a free English class in the poor community of Armenia Bonito. It continues to amaze us how much interest there is in learning English. We get all kinds of ability levels. We are even starting to form a core of advanced students.
This Tuesday we worked on gerands, or active verbs like “working” or “reading”. We concluded the class with reading and pronunciation.
In a culture where less then 1/3 of the population attends school beyond the 6th grade, learning English is a solid skill to help set you apart in a job market that has a 28% unemployment rate.
