La Carpio, The Bridge, And Little Girls

kids at the river in La CarpioToday after school Mike went out to La Carpio and spent some time ministering to the kids. La Carpio is a poor community where tens of thousands of people live in shanty homes built of scrap metal and plywood.

Every Thursday we begin our ministry by walking about a half mile through the extremely poor neighborhood, along the dirt streets, crossing countless streams of humane waste, down to the river and back to the ministry center. The spectacle of 10, or so, gringos walking through this community has somewhat of a Pide Piper effect and we usually return to the ministry center with 50 – 100 kids in tow.

the bridge over the river at La CarpioThe turnaround point on our walk is a rickety, scrap wood bridge that crosses a river of human waste and trash.  A few of us periodically cross over the bridge…well…just to say we did.  Well today was another bridge crossing for Mike. A little scary, but, the kids like it.

Upon our return to the ministry center Mike played with and loved on 3 or 4 girls that range in age from 7 to 10 years. It has now been 6 or 7 weeks running that Mike has played with these same girls. This is a regular time of joy, jump rope and laughter.

Next was Bible story time, craft time and snack time.  About 90 kids in all received love, had fun and heard about Jesus.  Another great afternoon at La Carpio.
