Rain And Flooding Push Back Honduran Elections
Honduras is postponing its presidential primaries because of bad weather. It rained here for almost three weeks straight. It has not rained in four days. Intense rains and flooding have left 34 dead and 16 missing. Flooding has damaged 80 percent of roads and over 8,000 homes. More than 40,000 people are currently residing in shelters.
The country's Congress has pushed back the primary elections by two weeks to November 30. Hondurans will decide the candidates for president, vice president, Congress and thousands of local races. The general elections will be held in November 2009. Current President Manuel Zelaya's four-year term ends in January 2010.
Our town of La Ceiba has been impacted by the rain and flooding, but it is the rural areas that have been hit the hardest.
