Spanish Word of the Week - Menudo

Menudo – This describes a very small amount of money…the American equivalent might be three or four pennies.

If you have some 50 or 100 colones coins in your hand you are holding monedas (coins).  But if you have a few 1 or 5 colones coins in your hand you are holding menudos (small money).  In Costa Rica, the exchange rate is about 500 colones to 1 dollar.  So a 1 colone coin is worth 1/5 of a penny. One and five colones coins are no longer produced, as it cost more money in raw material then they are worth.

I always thought that menudo was a popular 1980s Puerto-Rican boy band or a traditional spicy Mexican soup. Both are true.  But, you can’t buy a Menudo cassette or a bowl of soup for menudo.
