Tamales In Armenia Bonito And Youth Group

On Friday we went out to Armenia Bonito so that we could learn how to make and ultimately eat Honduran tamales.  The tamales were being sold for 50 cents each as a fundraiser for one of the churches.  Several ladies from the church gathered at one home to prepare the tamales for sale at a community event on Saturday.

Tersa making tamalesAll three of us and our three teammates went out to Armenia Bonito for the afternoon.  We were instructed how to make typical tamales and most of us took a crack at it – two types of maza, garbanzos, potatoes, rice and chick all wrapped in banana leafs and steamed for an hour.

We took our turns making a few tamales.  While they were cooking we played games with about 20 kids in the street.  It was a great community event that resulted in lots of laughs and two dozen tamales in our freezer…que rico (how tasty).

Mike leading gamesAfter the tamales, Mike, Josh, Jamie and Andy (our new teammates) attended FLAME, a high school age youth group in La Ceiba.  Mike lead all the kids in a half dozen games.  David, the leader, lead the group in a Bible study on giving God your all.

What a fun day.
