The 2009 Carnival In La Ceiba Comes To An End

the paradeAs we explained recently Carnival is a major event in La Ceiba each year.  This year’s Carnival is over.  It concluded Saturday night.  It was our first experience with this annual spectacle.

Each day leading up to the final Saturday the tourists become more prevalent, the traffic became worse and the nightly parties became more rowdy.  Each nightly party hosted several stages with live music and scantily clad dancers.

the foodWe were told that the final day’s events outdo them all.  At 2pm on Saturday the city was bifurcated as the major thoroughfare was blocked off with a parade.  The parade boasted dozens of floats and cultural marchers. Scantily clad dancers tossed beads into the crowd.  The highlight of the parade was several low flyovers by two Honduran jet fighters.  Amazing.

the final partyThe same road remained block for the evening’s party.  Over 20 blocks of music, dancing food and beer.  It got started around 7pm and continued on until early Sunday morning.  Each block had its own concert style stage with live music.  Along the street vendors sold beer, food, toys and gambling.

The main festivities were only four blocks from our home.  This was the biggest party we have ever seen.
