The Sounds Of Prayer
Every Monday night we go out to Armenia Bonito and join the community in a time of prayer. The three churches in Armenia Bonito and the two churches in the neighboring community of Primer de Mayo are represented by their Pastors and usually two or three other individuals. It is typically a gathering that includes us and 10-15 people from the community.
We typically spend an hour and a half praying for the churches, the communities, La Ceiba, Honduras and the world. Mike has been welcomed into the community as a spiritual leader and is usually asked to give a brief Bible message and lead the group in prayer.
In our home we are used to praying and do it daily as a family. The prayers of the men and women at this weekly event sound much different then the prayers heard in our home. There is clapping, pacing, shouting, and wailing. There are frequent loud outbursts of single words or phrases; holy, Father, Spirit, thank you, your glory. In addition every person in the room is verbally praying simultaneously. It can all be confusing and occasionally a little distracting.
As we frequently say in our home, “It is not bad, just different.” Our prayers our quiet, in our head and a bit more reserved. The good news is that God hears them all.
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him” (1 John 5:14-15).
