When Pigs Fly

when pig cycleLiving cross culturally you often see things that…well…that just don’t seem right. This doesn’t make your old culture or your new culture wrong…they just aren’t the same. We have adopted the missionary battle cry, “It’s not weird, it’s just different”.

It is important to not make judgments on an entire culture just because something isn't the way you are used to. Driving, shopping, paying bills, walking, talking on the phone, even going to the bathroom is different in differing cultures. Some things you get used to. Some things you embrace. But, some things are just so hard to comprehend.

Here is the kicker…when we return to the U.S. in a few weeks, we have been warned by experts and books to expect reverse culture shock. There are going to things about the U.S. that we used to think were normal, but now after three years in Central America, we are going to find odd.

The concept is called third culture. We will never fully fit in here in Honduras. But, now we will never again truly fit in back in the U.S. We have become our own, gangly, unorthodox, out of place culture. Pray for us.
