Child molestation, the child sex trade and sexual tourism are prevalent in Honduras. It is an unfortunate reality for many people we work with each day.
Five members of our mission team are certified to teach the Stewards Of Children child sexual abuse prevention program. This summer Kathy (our teammate) provided this 2 1/2 hour training to 55 visiting short-term missionaries. This is information they could use in Honduras and when they return to the U.S.
We provide this training to help these missionaries protect children wherever they are. It does not make them counselors or reporters, but helps people to be aware of what to look for. This knowledge may stop current abuse or prevent others from being abused. It lets predators know we will not tolerate their behavior.
Child sexual abuse is at epidemic proportions in Honduras. Just under 10% of all women in Honduras report being sexually abused between 15-24. The majority of sexual abuse cases in Honduras occur before the age of 11. Sexual abuse statistics in Honduras are among the highest in the world. A recent survey reported that 10,000 children are currently victims of commercial sexual abuse.
