Pineapple is La Ceiba's major export. Its largest producer is the Standard Fruit Company which is a subsidiary of the Dole Food Company. La Ceiba operates the second largest port in the country. The port handles pineapples, bananas, citrus fruits, coconuts, abacá fibre, fish, meat, coffee, and lumber.
Fruit picking, packing, and shipping are the largest employers in La Ceiba.
Open-air markets provide employment for thousands of people.
