Keeping Christ Out Of X-mas

A 2008 Gallup poll says that 81% of Americans identify with some version of the Christian faith.  A 2008 Fox News poll reveals 77% of Americans prefer saying "Merry Christmas" as opposed to something with less meaning. A 2008 Rasmussen poll says 82% believe Jesus Christ was the Son of God sent to earth to die for people’s sins, and 83% think that the person known to history as Jesus Christ actually walked the earth 2000 years ago.  The same poll says 64% of Americans celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday.

Why then do retailers, media outlets and our friends ignore the vast majority?  Why do we find theologically-modified, politically-corrected alternatives to what most Americans believe and the Bible proclaims? Why was it recently reported that thousands of Evangelical churches now use a watered down hymnal that alters the words from O Come All Ye Faithful from the traditional "O come let us adore him" to a neutered "O come in adoration"?

Is the war to remove Christ from Christmas a godless scheme cooked up by a sect of latte-sipping liberals, greedy retail tycoons, bearded ACLU communists and Ban Ki-moon followers who clandestinely gather in San Francisco synagogues to smoke pot, mutilate Bibles and execute abortions?  No, it is much more simple then that.

Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

Satan is alive and well and active in our lives.  For thousands of years he has patiently and methodically worked to put distance between us and Christ.  He loves that we butcher Christmas. He adores that our culture is moving our focus away from Christ.

When our culture attempts to convince Christians to stop talking about Christ and speak, act and celebrate with neutrality, Satan has won.  Not focusing on Christ is not neutral, it is defeat, and it is pleasing to Satan. Proclaim Christ and shame the devil.  Merry CHRISTmas!
