Missiology Through Scripture – Deuteronomy 4:6-8

“Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?” – Deuteronomy 4:6-8

The Creator of the Universe gave us his perfect Word to guide and direct us, but also for us to obey. By following his statutes, the world bares witness that we are different and attention is drawn to the reason for that difference: Jesus Christ. In addition, we are to follow God’s perfect law to enable us to show our allegiance to the Father.

As Israel followed the Law they were blessed by God in all facets of life. While other individuals and nations struggled, God’s elect stood at as holly and prosperous. The world saw Israel stand out. This resulted in the world being drawn to God’s people to see what was different about them. David Platt said, “God gave His people His Word so that when they followed this Word, they would show, display, the wisdom and the character and the glory of God to the nations around them. God gives them His Word by His grace for His glory among all the nations around them.”[1] Like Isael, God’s elect today are to stand out by being obedient to the statutes God has given us. The world will see we are different and be drawn to the Lord.

Christian liberty is a beautiful gift from God. The liberty we have in Christ is not authorization to walk away from God, but to walk with God. Our liberty in Jesus gives us, for the first time, the ability to obey God’s decrees and glorify him through our actions.

A Christian who lives like the world does not show obedience to the Farther, nor does he provide the world a tangible reason why it should change. As disciples in Christ, our actions can draw people toward Christ, or drive them from him. When we adhere to God’s will we acknowledge his perfect plan for us, his chosen children, and the entire history of humanity.
