Missiology Through Scripture – Psalm 48:10

“As your name, O God, so your praise reaches to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is filled with righteousness.” – Psalm 48:10

This psalm is a celebration of Zion being a unique city of God. It focuses on God raising up Zion to benefit the world. God’s reign brings joy to his elect, but here is found a hope the glory of the Lord will reach the Gentiles. The psalmist desires for worship and adoration of the Lord to go beyond Israel and into all the nations.

The right hand of God, the battle hand, the hand which holds the sword is here declared to be filled with righteousness. Be it through battle or disseminating mercy God has earned great praise. God, through the eyes of the residents of Jerusalem, has done so much which is worthy of praise. His liberal gifting of his wisdom, strength, mercy, and justice has sustained his elect. Matthew Henry said, “By the late signal deliverance of Jerusalem God had made himself a name; that is, he had gloriously discovered his wisdom, power, and goodness, and made all the nations about sensible of it; and so was his praise; that is, some in all parts would be found giving glory to him accordingly.”[1] God’s elect here see ample reason to glorify God’s name beyond their own boarders. Israel desires what God desires, the increase in the worship of God’s great name throughout the globe.

It is never wrong to pray for God to bless his people. However, our blessing are not for our personal joy or comfort. Our blessings are to be sought so the glory of God can be expanded. To use God-given resources for our personal enjoyment is offensive. All we have been given is to be used to expand the glory of God. Ask for great riches from the Lord and use that which he provides you for kingdom building. Please, dear Lord, provide your servant with that which he needs to expand your name.
