Missiology Through Scripture – Psalm 83:18

“that they may know that you alone, whose name is the Lord, are the Most High over all the earth.” – Psalm 83:18

This verse is not a call for a physical or governmental reign. The psalmist calls for a spiritual supremacy over the hearts of all people. The lost people groups in the world must come to know Yahweh as the only true god. God will judge all nations and they will see their gods are false and the one true Lord reigns. It is urgent for the nations to know this truth. Jesus cannot be worshiped alongside false deities. Christ reigns supremely in the heart of every man or he does not. There is no middle ground. Every man is bound for heaven in Christ or an eternity in hell without.

Yahweh is the sovereign over all the earth. No corner of the globe will escape the judgement of the Lord. Derek Kidner wrote, “There is a richer knowledge of God than the reluctant assent which is envisaged in verse 18, but this is the minimum. The psalm will not settle for less, nor for a smaller realm than all the earth.”[1] Choosing a false deity over Christ is voluntarily choosing an eternity in hell over heaven. There is not an escape clause, nor are there other deities who will provide for the nations.

The fact God is the judge of all nations is not opinion, but truth. Our missionaries must not be timid with the reality of the eternal state of the lost and the inalterable state of their eternity if they refuse to turn to Christ. Jesus is the only ruler over the nations. Others govern under him, by his appointment. However, no king nor president is above God. The souls of the rulers and the ruled alike are subject to Christ. Our Lord is the ultimate authority over the globe and only he is to be worshiped. God will not share his authority with any man or false god.
