The doctrine of the virgin birth claims that Jesus was conceived in Mary without the involvement of a human father. Muslims believe this to be true. According to Newsweek, 79% of all Americans believe Christ was born of a virgin, without a human father. John Calvin declared that Jesus, “was pleased to be conceived miraculously in the Virgin’s womb.” Billy Graham states that Christ was “born of a virgin”. But, does it matter?
Some people believe in Christ but not the virgin birth. Somehow turning water to wine or raising the dead is fine, but, being born of a virgin is difficult. If His exit (rising from the dead and ascending to Heaven) is miraculous, why would His entrance be any less?
Nearly 800 years before Jesus was born, Isaiah wrote, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” In order to fulfill prophecy, Christ had to be born of a virgin. If He was not born of a virgin He was not the Savior of man.
The Old Testament foretold that the Messiah would be born to a virgin and in Matthew and Luke the Bible confirms that indeed Jesus was born of a virgin. The Bible is the literal, infallible word of God. To deny the virgin birth is to deny the perfection of God and His Word. If the Creator of the Universe desired to be born to a virgin, and says that He was, then it is true. Merry Christmas!
