Spanish Word of the Week – Pura Vida

Pura Vida – This is a common greeting among Costa Ricans (Ticos). It’s literal translation is “pure life.”
In Costa Rica it is as much of a national motto as it is a greeting. It summarizes the local ideology of living at peace in a calm, uncluttered manner, appreciating a life surrounded by nature, family and friends. The expression is used in many forms, from a greeting, to a synonym for "hakuna matata", life is wonderful, excellent or enjoy.
We heard people say it to each other, but had no idea what it meant. We then learned it in our first day of class and have noticed people using it a lot. We now great Ticos with it in any setting.
