Spanish Word of the Week – Aguacera

Aguacera – This is one of many words to describe the rain in Costa Rica.  It’s literal translation is heavy rain or downpour.

In Costa Rica, in the rainy season, it rains almost every day for six months.  Because rain is such a prominent part of their lives they have dozens of words to describe the different types of rain.  Aguacera is the really hard, driving rain.

Since weather is so extreme, yet still a daily issue, it regularly enters into your daily interaction.  If you enter a building during a heavy rain you would shake off the water and say, “Que Aguacera!”  Which literarily means “What Rain!”, but, functionally could be translated to, “Man, look at that crazy rain!”
