It is time to prepare for the celebration of America’s independence and freedom. For years we celebrated the 4th of July by hosting or organizing a block party/bar-b-q/firework event. In recent years we worked at our church’s fireworks booth to raise money for missions.
This year our 4th of July is a little different. But, it means a little more. A dear friend recently pointed out to me that Freedom House rates Honduras as only a “partly free” country. The site lists the following concerns about Honduras; “a disturbing trend of “social cleansing” and vigilante killings that targeted young people suspected of gang activity.” And, “Threats to press freedom and insufficient labor laws, especially with respect to women.”
You’ve heard of the saying, “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” We have discovered that this is true for loved ones, food, cars, etc. This saying holds true for freedom. We miss and love the U.S. during this time of year. But, it is this very freedom that we as U.S. citizens enjoy that enables us to make the decision to move to Honduras and serve those that don’t share what we have.
