November 30th is the primary election in Honduras. People are voting for candidates for presidency, the legislature and local officials. The general election will be held in November of 2009.
No alcohol was sold on Saturday or Sunday to encourage a sober voter turnout. Armed military guard the polls and the ballots. Security is very serious. Eight days before the election two candidates were shot and killed in San Pedro Sula by masked gunmen.
This is the precursor to a very important election next year. The current governing Liberal Party has been growing ever closer to the anti-American President of Venezuela, Hugh Chavez, and the other regional leftist leaders of Nicaragua, Bolivia, Ecuador and Cuba. The current Honduran government has been adopting an increasingly anti-U.S. tone.
We will keep watching and praying.
