A United Nations report released this week states that Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world.
The 2011 Global Study on Homicide calculated a rate of 82.1 homicides per 100,000 people for Honduras, 66 per 100,000 for El Salvador, 59 per 100,000 for Cote D’Ivoire in West Africa and 52.1 per 100,000 for Jamaica. While Mexico dominates the medias reporting its homicide rate was 18.1 per 100,000 and the United States had a homicide rate of 5 per 100,000.
Crackdowns on drug cartels in Mexico and Colombia have pushed gang activity to Central America, which has long been a lucrative corridor for trafficking. Organized crime and drug trafficking are the cause for the murder increase in Honduras. The vast majority of the crime is gang on gang violence as rivals battle each other for territory.
Please pray for the safety of our family and our mission team serving fulltime here in Honduras.
