The school year in EG began a month ago and with it came the implementation of a new law intend to reduce the amount of teen pregnancy. Before starting the new school year all girls were required to submit to a pregnancy test. If a girl was pregnant she was not permitted to attend school.
EG has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the world. The average age of first-time pregnancies is just under 16 years of age. The government implemented the new law in an effort to encourage girls to place a higher priority on their education and encourage the girls to abstain or use protection.
Citizens are divided on the law. Many view it as a needed step to force the girls to change their ways, while others feel it will further devalue the status of women.
