MTW, West Coast – Update #3

So, Mike, tell us what life will be like for you and Erin…

Where are you going to live?
We don’t know the exact answer to this question just yet. Of the 129 PCA churches in California, Arizona, and Nevada, 110 of them are in California. So, we will certainly be living in California, but we don’t yet know what city.

How will you furnish your home?
In 2006 we quit our jobs, got rid of all our furniture, and sold our home. We are moving from Africa with six duffle bags of clothes, and that is it. In our late 40s we are starting all over. We don’t own a home, a bed, a plate, or chair. When we decide where to live, we will have to start from scratch. This is a big stress for us, but there is a way you can help. Please prayerfully consider going to this WISH LIST and buying a few basic home items to help us start our new life. Mail the to the address provided, which is the home of Mike’s brother. When we get settled we’ll furnish our home with your blessings.

What part will Erin play?
Erin will remain active in the ministry. She will contribute lots of time helping to mentor and train new missionaries.

Can you afford to live in California?
We will not be able to afford the lifestyle we had in California back in 2006. We will start off by renting an apartment and we will only be able to purchase one car. It will be a stretch, but we know God will provide all we need.

Will it be weird for you to live in the U.S.?
Probably. The U.S. is very different then the places we have lived in the past 10 years. The change in lifestyle and culture will take some getting used to. We anticipate reverse culture shock. But, frankly, our hearts have changed, and we don’t really want to fit in like we used to. We will be strangers in a strange land. Please be in prayer that the change is not overwhelming and we can learn to serve God in this new context.

MTW, West Coast – Update #2

So, Mike, give us more details about this new ministry…

Where will you be working?
The new MTW, West Coast office will be focused on sending out missionaries from California, Arizona, and Nevada. Our job will be to promote missions, recruit missionaries, and mentor them from the churches, seminaries, and colleges in those three states. There will be much traveling throughout that region.

Are you only working with Presbyterian (PCA) churches?
No. While there are over 120 PCA churches in our region, and seven PCA presbyteries, there are plenty of churches in the OPC, PRC, URC, EPC, CRC, and other (or no) denominations, with whom we will be working. In addition, there are five TGC regional chapters, seven RUF chapters, dozens of Christian undergraduate universities and many seminaries. Mike will be building relationships with all those folks and promoting missions within them.

Will you have an office and staff?
Yes. Part of the job includes finding a physical headquarters and hiring new staff to run the show.

What does the first six-months of the job look like?
Mike will need to build relationships with hundreds of churches and other missions-minded people within the region. For the first six-months to one-year Mike will be meeting with pastors, missions committees, presbyteries, TGC regional meetings, college ministries, seminaries, and more to cultivate relationships bound by God’s glory in missions.

What is the ultimate goal of this new ministry?
Once relationships have been built in California, Arizona, and Nevada we hope to move into a situation where the MTW, West Coast office is known as the people to turn to if an individual or church wants to know more about missions. We want to spread a missional-heart throughout the region which results in the training and mentoring dozens and hundreds of new cross-cultural missionaries.

MTW, West Coast – Update #1

Following 10-years of serving as fulltime MTW missionaries on two continents, Mike and Erin are returning to live in the United States. But, we are NOT leaving missions. We have taken on a new challenge to raise up and prepare new missionaries to go out into the world. Here are answers to a few common questions to help you better understand:

What will you be doing?
Mission to the World (MTW) is opening a new office in California to train new missionaries from the West Coast. Mike has been asked to establish the new office, hire the staff, and lead the efforts to train and prepare new missionaries for the field from California, Arizona, and Nevada.

Do you still need my financial support?
Yes, we will be operating off of the financial support of churches and individuals. While we will no longer be serving on the foreign mission field, we will be responsible for identifying and training lots of new missionaries to go out and serve in foreign cultures. Our impact on global missions is greater now, than it has ever been. Please prayerfully consider continuing to support our efforts to impact the world with the gospel.

Where will you work?
We will be responsible for raising up new Reformed missionaries from parts of California, Nevada, and Arizona. We will frequently travel throughout that region visiting churches, church leaders, universities, and future missionaries to promote God’s Great Commission and raise interest in sending more missionaries.

Where will you live?
We don’t yet know exactly. But, we will be establishing a new home somewhere in California to correspond with the location of the new MTW office we will be opening there.

What are your immediate needs?
Ten-years ago, Mike and Erin sold our home and our worldly belongings to follow God onto the foreign mission field. We are now following God back to the U.S. to promote his global glory, and we have nothing with which to start a new life. In the U.S. we don’t own a car, a home, a bed, or plate. In our late 40s we will be starting a new life. If you would like to help us start a new home we have created a registry. Please consider buying something from THIS LIST and help us to begin our new life. The items you purchase will be sent to the home of Mike’s brother (address provided on wish list).

When will you start?
Mike and Erin will leave Equatorial Guinea in early August and begin their new chapter of fulltime service right away.

What is your primary purpose?
Our purpose is to recruit, train, and mentor new MTW missionaries. Simply put, our job is to put more missionaries into the world for the expansion of God’s glory.

Do you still need regular prayers?
Yes, more than you know. We will continue to send out regular prayer updates. We desperately need your prayers. Moving back to the U.S. culture after 10-years away is intimidating. In addition, our new responsibilities are daunting.
